City council considers investing $8 million in ARPA funds towards turning old Gayfers building into affordable housing

Cell, Ala. (WALA) – The previous Gayfers building on Dauphin Avenue has been vacant for a number of decades, but it could shortly be turned into reasonably priced housing models.

But with $24 million coming from state and federal tax credits, the mayor is hoping that $8 million in ARPA funding will offset remaining fees. Even so, not anyone feels like it’s a sensible expense.
“Poor people who need to have the economical housing do not reside in Downtown Mobile so why do you not want to place $8 million into a developing in which persons who need to have it never reside there,” said Teresa Bettis.
Some feel that economical housing would be far better off in spots where there’s a better want like Toulminville and Content Hills
“It’s not conducive to place the little ones or people with family members in a person constructing in Downtown Mobile. It is not even in a capable census monitor which is qualified for those people ARP bucks,” additional Bettis.
The mayor’s administration maintains this is nonetheless a viable job that will enable those who need to have it
“It’s economical housing so it hence falls into the class in which we can use it where it can be invested for ARPA and we have web page command in performing with the developer,” explained Metropolis Lawyer Ricardo Woods.
“The Gayfers task is the only shovel ready job we have that addresses cost-effective housing in the metropolis,” said Stimpson.
