L.A. County Votes to Return Beach Property Taken From Black Family in 1924

Bruce’s Seashore will be returned to its rightful house owners.

The seaside home, positioned in Manhattan Seashore, California, was earlier owned by Willa and Charles Bruce—a Black couple who obtained the beach for $1,225 in 1912. The loved ones would turn the land into a full-fledged vacation resort for Black residents through a time when many seashores had been racially segregated. They offered visitors every little thing from dressing tents and a lodge to a dance corridor and a cafe. 

In accordance to CNN, the Bruce’s endured several years of vandalism and acts of violence, together with an attack by the Ku Klux Klan. But inspite of the harassment, the spouse and children continued to operate the seashore until eventually 1924, when the town seized the land under eminent domain.
